This scene got me thinking:
I think Ron Howard digs racing. And weirdly, it’s already re-defined his career twice. Pre-2013, with projects like The Dilemma and Angels & Demons, Howard was slipping into ‘Dad’s Favorite Director’ territory. ‘Reliability’ had now become predictability. But then this happened:
So visceral. So high-octane. More like Tony Scott and less like Clint Eastwood. (And it seems to be sticking.) But I shouldn’t have been surprised. Here was Howard’s 1st film as director:
Grand Theft Auto is an automotive orgy bursting with T-boned explosions. Its trailer ACTUALLY brags about the total number of cars trashed. Which means, as Howard was chancing his ENTIRE career, it’s cars that he felt safest to shoot. I mean, he even wrote the thing. (124).
